CHAPTER 13

Spotter: A person who is positioned under the climber, ready to catch them in case of a fall, with the particular goal of protecting the climber’s head and neck from impact with the ground.

May 7, 2:13 am

Pyramid Peak

Aspen, Colorado

“Even if a chopper could get in the air in the next few hours, he has to actually survive that long,” Fife said, his words punching sharp while stress radiated from his stiff posture. “I’ve been trained and have supplies, but I’ve never dealt with anything like this in the field. Which isn’t great when we have someone who’s been in crisis for over twelve hours.”

Meg understood Fife’s frustration. For them to come this far, and for this man to have survived a plane crash only to die hours later, simply because they couldn’t get him the help he needed? It was maddening.

He flicked a glance toward Hensley, then unzipped his pack and started to dig through it. “On top of that, I don’t like the look of him, but Ben has his hands full with a more immediately critical case.”

“Don’t count us, or him, out yet. I have a plan.” Meg unbuckled and set down her pack, then dug her satellite phone out of her jacket pocket. A quick check of the battery—still at eighty percent—and she placed the call, putting it on speaker.

It rang twice, then Todd answered, sounding fully awake. “Meg? Everything okay?”

“Hawk and I are fine. But we need your help.”

In the background came the snap of the bedside light turning on. “Whatever you need.”

“We made it to the plane and we have survivors. Some of them are in bad shape. I’m here with Rob Fifer, one of the Mountain Rescue Aspen guys, and the copilot sustained a femur fracture in the crash. They got him out of the cockpit before the plane burned, but he’s in bad shape and has been for about twelve hours. Fife has been trained on this kind of injury, but has never dealt with it himself in the field. We could use your experience.”

“You have it. Is he carrying an emergency med kit?”

Meg looked at Fife, who pointed to the bursting red bag he’d pulled from his pack. “Yes.”

“Then let’s do this. Can he hear me?”

Meg circled around Laumbach to kneel on the other side of Slaight, tipping her head down slightly to light the leg. “You’re on speaker, and he’s here with me.”

“Hey, Rob. I’m Todd. I’m a firefighter/paramedic with DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services.”

“Just call me Fife. And it’s nice to meet you.” Fife grimaced. “Sorry to get you out of bed at four AM, your time.”

“No problem. Middle-of-the-night calls are what we do.”

“Theoretically, I know what I’m doing, but normally in a case like this, we’d have a much larger team and I’d be guided by someone who’s managed something like this before.” Fife unzipped the bag as he talked, opening it out into four compartments, every nook and cranny jammed with supplies. “But we’re shorthanded, currently.”

“I can talk you through what you need to do,” Todd assured him.
